Lifetime to explore R. Kelly Marriage in Aaliyah Biopic.June 25, 2014 11 Comments
When news broke that Lifetime was going to make a biopic about the life of late and great R&B singer Aaliyah, we all knew immediately that the singer's family wouldn't be too pleased. As expected, the Haughton family vowed to shut down production on the biopic. Many believed it was because Lifetime didn’t contact them for their input in the first place. Now, we hear it may be because of something else.
According to reports and sources, Lifetime plans on exploring the controversial relationship between Aaliyah and her first musical mentor R. Kelly. Many fans remember the big controversy surrounding Kelly and his then-teen protégé. It is alleged that Kelly, then 27, secretly and illegally married Aaliyah, which Aaliyah denied the story. However, a marriage license surfaced that showed the couple had married, only after Aaliyah’s age was falsified to 18. The union was eventually annulled by her family.
The Lifetime biopic is set to cover the events of Aaliyah life from the age of ten to the age of her death in a plane crash at the age of 22. Aaliyah we set to be played by Disney star Zendaya Coleman.
The film's executive producer, Debra Martin Chase stated, "Aaliyah’s personal and professional relationship with R. Kelly will be explored with care in the film as we set out to depict her life with the utmost respect. Above all else, it’s our hope to inspire an entirely new generation with her music and larger-than-life talent.”
No official name or release date for the project has been released. We will keep you updated as new updates on the film is revealed.
