Disney has made some things and some characters un-canon in the Star Wars Universe under their ownership. However, somethings are being made canon little by little it seems. USA Today has an excerpt from Thrawn by Timothy Zahn, which is set to release April 11 and still too far away from my taste. The novel reveals that Admiral Thrawn before he became the grand admiral or even a real member of the Imperial military, had a surprising source of information on SheevE Palpatine or Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine.

The whole excerpt, which is from early in the book, shows Thrawn's first meeting with Palpatine where he offers to serve the Galactic Empire. Palpatine gives his word and says that “Perhaps your servant can speak to the strength of that vow.”

Thrawn goes on to say that this “servant” “always spoke highly of Chancellor Palpatine,” which is a hint that they met before the Empire was officially created. Another big hint to that effect? The name of the servant was Anakin Skywalker.

Not Darth Vader. So, at some point, Jedi knight Anakin Skywalker had an encounter with Thrawn and the Chiss (his alien race), told Thrawn all about Palpatine, and gave enough away that Thrawn—master of observation—figured out that Palpatine was making a servant out of Anakin. That’s... a lot packed into what was likely not a deep conversation.

The excerpt has Thrawn talk about dangers in the Unknown Regions, which Palpatine says he’s going to investigate himself. In Aftermath: Empire’s End, we learned that Palpatine was obsessed with exploring outside the known galaxy, so that fits. The excerpt reveals that, yes, like in the EU, Thrawn has been exiled. And it also has him explaining that he doesn’t see serving the Empire and the Chiss as mutually exclusive goals. So he’s pretty much, in the background at least, still the Thrawn we all know and love. The unknown threat just may be the Yuuzhan Vong hopefully.

The Vong were the beings from another galaxy that Palpatine was really getting the Galactic Empire to fight if they invaded the Star Wars Universe. However, Palpatine was destroyed on the Death Star II by Darth Vader and the year later the Yuuzhan Vong still invaded and one of the bloodiest wars the Star Wars Universe had seen still took place. The Vong is one of the species that Thrawn's people or the Chiss fought against. This would tie in the series again with the Star Wars Universe and I don't see Disney just getting rid of beings that pose the greatest threat than any the Star Wars Universe had ever seen. Also, you can't really speak about Thrawn without at least having the Vong. Vong also were beings who were force resistant. Only the most powerful force users could hurt them. I mean the likes of Luke Skywalker.
