Saudi Arabia Breaks 35-Year Cinema Ban for 'Black Panther'

The Black Panther film that stars the great Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyongo, Chadwick Boseman and more is steadily breaking many records. The film became the highest grossing Marvel film in the universe.

It also became the most tweeted film in history and even became the only film to stay number one for more than 6 weeks at the box office dethroning 'Avatar.' Now, Black Panther is still breaking barriers and making history.

It was just revealed that the film that features a 98% Black cast has caused Saudi Arabia to break their 35 year old ban on cinema. Disney and its Middle East distributor partner, Italia Film, will be releasing the Marvel superhero blockbuster April 18 in a new AMC-branded movie theater in Riyadh with a gala premiere, an Italia Film spokesman said.

The “Black Panther” bow will mark the first screening of a film release in the kingdom since movie theaters were banned in the early 1980s, after Saudi Arabia adopted ultraconservative religious standards in 1979.

“Black Panther” will inaugurate the new Saudi era in a luxurious cinema in a building originally intended to be a symphony concert hall. The facility, in Riyadh’s King Abdullah Financial District, has more than 600 leather seats, on orchestra and balcony levels, and marble bathrooms.

AMC Entertainment, which is owned by Chinese conglomerate Dalian Wanda, expects to open up to 40 cinemas in Saudi Arabia within five years and up to 100 theaters in Saudi Arabia by the year 2030. It should be noted that the population of Saudi Arabia is 32 million with 70% of its population being under the age of 30 and affluent citizenry. These factors with a few others will lead to believe that movie theaters will make an extremely amount of money by allowing movies to play in the area.=

With this, you can expect Black Panther to possibly be the highest grossing film in history.
